Ray Deptula on writing the American Revolution from the British side
Ray Deptula joins us to discuss his historical fiction series set during the American Revolution. They explore why he chose to tell the story from the British perspective, how the books portray slavery and military life, and what the conflict reveals about government, freedom, and political power.
The conversation ranges from colonial history and the American founding to modern debates about centralized government and free speech. Ray also shares how his Navy experience shaped his writing and talks about the contemporary novel he hopes to write next.

Most stories about the American Revolution ask readers to choose a side. Former U.S. Naval Officer Ray Deptula asks a different question: What happens when loyalty to people matters more than loyalty to politics? Deptula’s two-book Those Damned Yankees series tells the story of Jack Halliday, a young British soldier who ultimately fights for both the British and Continental armies, not because his politics change, but because the people he cares about do.
